Miss Fresh

Hello all my fellow foodies!

Today’s post is going to be a liiiiiittle different from usual. Instead of writing about a restaurant, I’ll be telling you about my cooking experience with Miss Fresh! I know what you’re thinking, “What!? YOU cook!?”, and the answer is no (lol). I’m rarely found in the kitchen unless I’m cooking up something relatively simple. But, I decided to try something new, and try an ingredient/cooking subscription box! I’ve been wanting to try one of these out for a while, and saw it on Groupon, so thought why not? Now, you’re in for a loooong post, so definitely grab a snack or drink (don’t worry, I’ll wait!).

So before receiving my ingredients, I had to pick out what dishes I wanted to cook. One reason why I chose Miss Fresh over the other subscriptions is the fact that they had the most variety of dishes to choose from. Each week they have about 8-10 options, ranging from vegetarian dishes, healthier dishes, and even dishes created by guest chefs. They also had diversity in the ingredients! For example, for one of the dishes I had, one ingredient I used was garam masala. I had never used or tasted it before, so it was definitely something new to me!

The box finally came late in the afternoon on the day of its scheduled delivery and I was ecstatic! I couldn’t wait to crack open the box and see what was inside. I honestly couldn’t wait to start cooking again, since I hadn’t spent much time in the kitchen after I moved back from London. I chose the four following recipes/dishes and each dish was supposed to be able to feed two people:

  1. Asian salmon tartare
  2. Lime shrimp with coconut avocado cream
  3. Fine herb sausage casserole
  4. Indian-inspired pizza

The first dish I attempted was the Asian salmon tartare. It was a play on poke, a Hawaiian dish that consists of seasoned raw fish, similar to a slaw or salad. Although I’m not a huge fan of raw fish, I thought, if I’m gonna be stepping out of my comfort zone and cooking dishes that I’ve never made before, why not try something new? There was surprisingly a lot of prep that needed to be done for this dish. Although it required practically no “cooking”, I did have to do a lot of prep for the actual tartare.

I can’t say I completely enjoyed the dish. Granted, I did say that I’m not really into raw fish, and although I did make it myself, I still couldn’t really get over the texture of the fish. The recipe didn’t call for any salt or pepper, which it definitely needed, and the baguette-to-fish ratio was completely off. Also, I thought the incorporation of the granny smith apple would be good, but after a while I couldn’t eat anymore of it. I’d rate this recipe a 3 out of 5.

The second dish I attempted was the fine herb sausage casserole. Looking at the picture of the dish, it didn’t look like much of a casserole. I mean, my idea of a casserole was that it usually gets baked in the oven. However, this one didn’t. The recipe’s instructions were quite vague when it came to mixing everything together, and I burnt most of my apples (lol, this is why I don’t spend much time in the kitchen). It also instructed me to broil the dish, but didn’t tell me what temperature to heat the oven at (unless there’s a way to broil things without putting them into the oven), so I just left it in the pan.

I didn’t like this dish at all. The final outcome wasn’t what I was expecting. I like the idea of mixing sweet and savoury food, but this was definitely not one mix that I liked. I’d rate this recipe 1 out of 5.

The third dish I attempted was the lime shrimp with coconut avocado cream with a quinoa salad. This was the dish I was most excited about making since I love shrimp! It was a pretty easy dish to execute, with the hardest step being peeling the shrimp (lol). I had also never made quinoa! The recipe did call for the shrimp to be grilled, but since it was still pretty cold and didn’t have access to a grill, I pan-fried them instead.

This was by far my favourite dish of the four! The avocado cream was good, and the flavour of the shrimp was amazing! I also enjoyed the quinoa salad, as it had some sweetness to it from the diced orange! I would definitely make this recipe again and would rate it 5 out of 5!

The final dish I attempted was the Indian-inspired pizza. It was probably the easiest dish of the four to make, as it really only required me to cut an onion and mix the base sauce together.

I quite enjoyed this dish, as it was a different spin on one of my favourite foods! However, I did find that the greek yogurt base dried out my throat a bit, so I did need extra water when I was eating it. I also really enjoyed the fact that it had a lot of spinach on it! I’d rate this dish 4 out of 5!

My overall thoughts of the experience is that I’d definitely do it again! I found that I actually quite enjoy cooking, just find it difficult to be creative, or to find the time. The only thing that is holding me back from being consistent with my subscription (the service does allow you to skip weeks, as long as it’s done at least a week before the shipping date) is the fact that it’s expensive! Four meals for 2 people costs about $70 a week, whereas I can spend the same amount of money and buy a week’s worth of groceries and cover 3 meals a day. As much as I loved the service, I would only purchase another week if I really loved all the recipes!

I’d rate my whole MissFresh experience: 4 out of 5 heart-eyed emojis!

😍😍😍😍

Until next time, xo
